Phenylalanine

Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid. Phenylalanine has got immense metabolic role in the body. It is ketogenic as well as glycogenic. Phenylalanine is initially but irreversibly hydroxylated to tyrosine. Tyrosine then undergoes series of metabolic changes leading to the formation of hormones epinephrine, nor epinephrine, thyroxin and tri-iodothyronine. It is not synthesized in the body but in the microorganisms it is synthesized.

Phenylalanine may undergo bacterial breakdown in the intestine by the bacterial enzyme with the formation of phenyl acetic acid. This phenyl acetic acid may be converted into benzoic acid. These toxic substances are absorbed and detoxicated in the liver. Like all other amino acids, phenylalanine also takes part in the synthesis of tissue protein.

It is available in three chemical forms: L-phenylalanine, the natural form of phenylalanine found in proteins throughout the body; (2) D-phenylalanine, a mirror image of L-phenylalanine that is synthesized in a laboratory; and (3) DL-phenylalanine, a combination of the previous two forms.

Sources of phenylalanine

L-phenylalanine is found in most foods that contain protein such as beef, poultry, pork, fish, milk, yogurt, eggs, cheese, soy products (including soy protein isolate, soybean flour, and tofu), and certain nuts and seeds.

Banana is also a rich source of phenylalanine.

The artificial sweetener aspartame is also high in phenylalanine.

D-phenylalanine is synthesized in the laboratory is not found in food.

Benefits of phenylalanine

D-phenylalanine may help reduce chronic pain associated with certain health conditions by stimulating nerve pathways in the brain that control pain

D-phenylalanine may improve rigidity, walking disabilities, speech difficulties, and depression associated with Parkinson's disease

Evidence suggests that combining L-phenylalanine (oral and topical) with UVA radiation for people with vitiligo (a condition characterized by irregular depigmentation or white patches of skin) may lead to some darkening or repigmentation of the whitened areas, particularly on the face.

Phenylalanine is also used to give relief to the patients suffering from depression. This is thought to be due to enhanced production of brain chemicals such as dopamine and nor epinephrine.

Phenylalanine acts as an analgesic. It also acts as an appetite suppressant by administrating the release of an intestinal hormone that signals the brain to feel satiated after eating. As an analgesic, it has been shown to decrease back pain, toothaches, and pain associated with migraine headaches.

It has also been used to treat attention deficit disorder, fatigue, Parkinson’s disease and premenstrual syndrome.

Deficiency symptoms of phenylalanine

Symptoms of phenylalanine deficiency include confusion, lack of energy, decreased alertness, decreased memory, and diminished appetite.

Its deficiency can also lead to stunted growth, apathy, muscle loss, and weakness.

A rare metabolic disorder called phenylketonuria (PKU) occurs in people who are missing an enzyme that is needed to properly metabolize phenylalanine. Symptoms of PKU, which tend to appear between three and six months of age, include eczema, developmental delay, an abnormally small head, and hyperactivity. If it is not treated before three weeks of age, PKU can cause severe, irreversible mental retardation

Symptoms of high intake

Doses in excess of 5,000 mg a day may be toxic and can cause nerve damage.

High quantities of DL-phenylalanine may cause mild side effects such as nausea, heartburn, and headaches.

Most consumers don't know that too much Phenylalanine is a neurotoxin and excites the neurons in the brain to the point of cellular death.

Emotional and behavioral disorders can all be triggered by too much Phenylalanine in the daily diet.

Phenylalanine can cause irreversible brain damage and death, especially when used in high quantities or during pregnancy.

Excessive amounts can also lead to hypertension and/or migraine headaches.

Daily requirement

Birth to 4 months: 125 mg per kilogram of body weight per day

Children 5 months to 2 years: 69 mg per kilogram of body weight per day

Children 3 to 12 years: 22 mg per kilogram of body weight per day

The combination of oral and topical phenylalanine (together with ultraviolet light) has been used to treat children with vitiligo. Physician would determine the dose and appropriate length of time to continue the therapy.

Teenagers and adults: 14 mg per kilogram of body weight per day

Some experts suggest that adults may need as much as 39 mg per kilogram of body weight per day for general health and doses as high as 50 to 100 mg per kilogram have been used in studies of those with vitiligo. The most common amounts used range from 750 to 3,000 mg per day for adults.

Other points

People with PKU and women who are lactating or are pregnant should not take phenylalanine supplements.

DL-phenylalanine may cause symptoms of anxiety, jitteriness, and hyperactivity in children. Children with ADHD may need to avoid foods containing aspartame, which is made from phenylalanine.

Patients already taking antidepressants should not supplement with phenylalanine.

phenylalanine in my trident gum,

I'll stop chewing this, but I will stiff offer it :P

No wonder I had huge headaches, and it caused my brain to have stimulated activity. I scored a 143 on a state IQ test when I usually score 124.

hi i am a body builder in cardiff, i have a bit of a sweet tooth but i try to combat this by drinking alot of the 'healthy living tesco cranberry and rasberry drink' i drink around 1litre a day but its low calory so im not worrying about that, i drink loads of plain water too. do you think that i could get severe side-affects from the high phenylanaline content?

I have been dieting for some time now... I started eating yoplait yogurt light, which contains phenylalanine. I just relized that to much can be harmfull, but for some reason there is nothing, in the nutrition facts on the container, stating how many grams or mg's per serving. Shouldn't this be mandatory??!!
#9 - Teri - 03/10/2008 - 12:09
I think about Phenylalanine it ok for health. If you take it in requriment and take plain water enough.
#10 - OY - 03/17/2008 - 23:12
I stopped drinking Diet soda since Christmas. I was having cramps, nausea, vomitting, itching, and acid reflux. All stopped within 2 days. Now I'm feeling the nausea again because I've been using the little powder packets that you add to water bottles. It contains phenylalanine too! Stopping those today!

And because coke are evil, lol.

I tried to cut out my sugar intake and decided to use an artificial sweetner. After several weeks, I began to have severe joint pain in my shoulders and hips. I stopped using the artificial sweetner and the pain improved. I think there are other side effects and wished the FDA would make them list them.
#14 - Deanna - 06/09/2008 - 08:05
this phenylalanine if taken as i;m reading the side effect;s. would not be good for myself . because off the side effect;s keep you from seelping. is this right.

I eat a packet of Doritos every day, I have been really sick with dizziness and headache and was told to check the packet to see for Phenylalanine !! yep it's there so that's the end of my Doritos eating!!
#17 - di - 07/07/2008 - 07:11
Whenever I drink any liquid containing phenylalanine, I get severe toothache. Yesterday was the worse, since I had a protein drink and then a diet coke 4 hours later. I had to take about 4 standard advils to combat the pain. I didn't think I was going to make it through the night. The pain was awful.
#18 - Sheaquan - 07/10/2008 - 08:27
i used to drink lots of phenylalanine in diet coke and my psorisis was out of control over most of my body. A few weeks after i stopped drinking diet coke 90% of my psorisis plaques virtually disappeared. Phenylalanine should be banned from drinks
#19 - Carol - 07/10/2008 - 09:26
Wrigley's Extra sugar free chewing gum contains phenylalanine. The only side effect I have is as a laxative:)
#20 - symion - 07/14/2008 - 22:44
It doesn't sound like any of you are ingesting enough phenylalanine to have such obvious side effects. I suggest you all find something constructive to do with your time. Remember, phenylalanine is part of a well balanced diet and is an essential amino-acid. Only worry if all you eat all day is crystal light and 5 gum.
#21 - randy r.n. - 07/29/2008 - 04:13
I'm using a diet supplement that has naturally occuring L Phenylalanine and no sweet taste to it at all. I'm thinking it's all the artificial sweetener uses for phenylalanine that is causing the problem.

Any thoughts on that?
#22 - Neza - 09/03/2008 - 08:07
I just bought a random ice breakers sour mint pack today..i began to eat it and a few hours later i got a massive stomach ache and diarrea...then i found this site and am never to eat this or chew 5 gum ever again.

I have been drinking diet lipton Green and White tea for a year now. I was wanting to cut my sugar intake with regular teas. I have noticed all of these symptoms and I think it's due to this crap.

I stay tired all the time. I usually get 8 hours a sleep a night and it doesn't seem to be enough.

I have started getting really bad heartburn that just wont go away.

I have itching all the time

I have really weird sensations in my head. It's hard to explain. Think medicine head. You know if you are taking cold medicine how it can make you feel.

I have stated getting anxiety attacks.

My memory isn't the way it used to be. I forget stuff all the time.

My concentration level has gone out the door.

I'm only 34 so my memory should be fine and my concentration level should be just as fine.

I have talked to my doctor and he and I sat down and discussed everything I was feeling,,,, meaning these side effects.

I was asked if I drink a lot of diet drinks... I drink these teas like water. I was told to stop and see if all of these issues go away.

This will be my test. Today, I will no longer be taking any drinks or food with this in it to see.

I will keep you all posted,,,,,,,,, call it my test

I think all of this is attributed to the Phenylalanine so lets see.
#25 - concerned - 09/12/2008 - 19:12
I've never had any noticeable side effect from phenylalanine or aspartame.
#26 - Cat - 09/12/2008 - 22:13
All wrigley's spearmint and peppermint gum now has phenylalanine..I had been chewing it for years and thought they changed the packaging only..but they started adding this..I am trying to find regular gum that has none of this in it..any brands you know of?
#27 - gum - 09/18/2008 - 18:02
I been dieting also and i drink Sam choice Clear American Sparkling water like 60+ oz a day sometimes. Lately I been jittery, anxious and sick to my stomach. I eat good. Today I noticed a warning on the bottle it read contains Phenylalanine... After reading this article I know now why I feel the way I do... damn water is making me sick. Why the hell isnt the FDA doing something to prevent these companies from injecting us with this crap.
#28 - brian - 09/25/2008 - 17:58

I drink at least 10,000mg of Phenylalanine as well as chew nothing but 5 gum, and I only have minor nerve damage... don't believe this stuff, it's good for you! And 2 of the 5 times I have had brain surgery the damage WAS reversible! I gotta stop now tho, these migranes are killing me, MORE GUM!
#30 - D.T. - 10/13/2008 - 12:16
for comment 25 I am having the same problems you are. I have been to all kinds of doctors they put me on med's for panic disorders. My symptoms started after drinking sugar free red bull Never Again It has messed me up so bad Am not myself anymore sad something can do this It is no wonder 15 million americans have panic disorders think it is because of this crap in drinks and food
#31 - Tanya - 10/15/2008 - 16:22
I had tried Tava energy drink and that would get a head ache afterwards so I had to toss those. I picked up some Clear American sparkling water and that too gave me a headache -- common denominator? phenylalanine
#32 - well lookie here - 10/15/2008 - 21:06
well I was taking about 4 supplements and I did not read the labels correctly and realized all 4 had phenylalanine in them, well definalty mild heart burn, itching in lower legs, and wierd thoughts. well needless to say I"m stopping all supps.
#33 - KS - 10/22/2008 - 20:10
I agree with Randy r.n. American people tend to ingest all foods and drinks in exess. I drink my eight, eight oz. glasses of water /day and 1/3 of a 20OZ diet 7up each day. I now sleep better and have been losing weight. We all need to stop being such gluttins!
#34 - Kristi Nelson - 10/28/2008 - 13:08
I have been on a long trip and had to go to work as soon as I got back...needless to say, I could barely keep my eyes open. I went to the drug store and got some 5-hour ENERGY which contains phenyl. It is something that I would not use unless desperate, none the less, there was not any listing of the mg.s in the dose. Shouldn't that at least be listed if taking this is so controversial?
#35 - Georgia O' - 10/29/2008 - 14:46
My 7 year old daughter acts like a crazy out of control demonic kid after chewing "our" gum- all sugar free, especially Stride and Dentyne Ice- then 45 min. later she is totally fine. We just realized that it is the gum shes chewing not a neurological problem!!! It has happened on a few occasions and we finally linked it to the gum. Beware of this with children!!
#36 - Amy - 10/30/2008 - 20:18
I have been drinking diet green tea because i was told to give up diet pepsi. great, now what do i do? Both have phenylalanine in them. Is there anything we can drink that is sugarfree and good for us? I KNOW ABOUT THE SIDEEFFECTS OF SPLENDA!What are our choices? Sick of trying to lose weight!
#37 - Diane Parks - 11/07/2008 - 14:14
I've never experienced these symptoms to my knowledge, I was hoping to try some to curb appetite, anybody?
#38 - comet - 11/10/2008 - 21:55
To number 37, How about making up your own green tea using the herb which is really good for you. It helps balance your metablism and you can make an "ice tea" variety and it has nothing but natural products in it. I think we all need to try and look into our diets and have LOTS of the natural stuff and only occasional "bought" stuff, this way we won't have a build up in our bodies.

#39 - reader - 11/25/2008 - 00:44
you cant find any gum that doesn't have this stuff in it. apparently it caused cancer in lab rats. i still chew gum ven with this stuff but somebody should seriously send a letter to the goverment saying it should be a law for phenylalanine not to be in drinks. try it! it could become a law!
#40 - tina - 12/01/2008 - 06:21
This has confirmed what I always thought. As a teen my friends were all jealous coz I got "drunk" on lemonade. Over the years I have noticed warning that it includes phenylalanine and wondered if that was the cause. I still drink my vodka with lemonade to ensure I am a happy drinker!
#41 - Lemonade junkie - 12/01/2008 - 11:13
I've been chewing the 5 (blue) gum like candy. I love it. It does upset the stomach at first and may cause diarrhea until your body gets use to it. I want to know if there's any long term damage? I buy this by the box at Sam's!
#42 - Eva - 12/01/2008 - 14:02
ok. so i love chewing my gum. and i know that phenylalanine is in sugerless gum...ahhh i dont know what to do! hhaha.
#43 - meeee - 12/04/2008 - 09:10
I agree with #27. How come I don't see any choices of regular sugar in our chewing gum nowadays? They all have this stuff in it. Contains: Phenylalanine, is always last under ingredients. I would rather get cavities from sugar than some weird side effects of this stuff.
#44 - concerned citizen - 12/07/2008 - 17:20
i've been drinking 6 cans of diet coke every day for the past 10 years and to be quite honest i really havent had any bad side effects. i do as a mum however strongly suggest never giving children any coca cola products. my daughter collapsed after drinking one can of coca cola. she was 11 at the time.
#45 - carlyanne - 12/12/2008 - 17:03
I been having trouble sleeping and my head feels funny (hard to explain to someone). I might fall asleep for 10 minutes and then I'm up for 3-4 hours before going back to sleep and feel like crap the next day. Sometimes I only sleep 2-3 hours a night and then can't sleep the next night when I should be very tired. I also have a lot of muscle twitching in my legs. My doctor also gave me panic/anxiety medication which I don't think I need. I drink 3-6 Diet Pepsi's a day. After reading the other articles I am going to drink only 1 a day to see if that helps and hopefully quit all together.
Any comments,

How safe is yoplit light yogurt ?
#47 - Joy - 12/16/2008 - 05:11
You guys need to understand that the common denominator in all of your symptoms is ASPARTAME which is in all diet foods, not phenylalinine. Aspartame is HIGH IN phenylalinine because it is MADE FROM, phenylalinine. It is NOT phenylalinine, it is a chemically altered version of Phyenylalinine. The reason things contain a blurb about something containing Phenylalinine is becuase people with PKU should not eat that because they cant metabolize phenylalinine, because they can't metabolize it, it is toxic to them. Phenylalinine is also in banannas, are you all going to give those up too? How bout just skipping the Aspartame, which can cause these problems in some, but not everyone. It is like smoking, some can do it for years and never have a problem, others can get sick very early on.
#48 - c.s. - 12/19/2008 - 15:15
In response to 37:
how about drinking water... i know sounds crazy, huh? i mean it's fat free, sugar free, phenylalanine free, and our body's made up of more than 75% of it. wait a minute, it's also good for you.
#49 - boner - 12/21/2008 - 19:27
I have been having leg cramps and get jittery when I chew gum. I just realized the connection that it is connected to phenylalanine. I was wondering when I even drank flavored water it didn't agree with me also. Then I realized even diet drinks contain this stuff. This is not in our mind. I have been having these symptoms for quite some time and never realized the connection until now. Even antihistamines contain this stuff. Can't take them. This stuff is not a good ingredient. It does cause problems.
#50 - Disgusted - 01/03/2009 - 12:21
OH btw,

guys this is also found in gum and alot of other products

it gives you a laxative effect so if you use it toomuch

Yeah your gonna be in the bathroom for a couple of days.

So be careful!

I appreciate all the comments on here. I've been wondering if my massive drinking of Diet Coke and chewing Extra bubble gum was going to kill me. WELL, maybe not but I have trouble sleeping, headaches, itching on my lower legs, my skin is totally out of control, my stomach lining is almost gone.....maybe it is time for WATER......thanks again
#53 - Theresa - 01/07/2009 - 14:52
You guys are all a bunch of hypochondriacs...My parents and grandparents have been drinking and eating this stuff all their lives and they are perfectly normal...stop whining.
#54 - Megan - 01/19/2009 - 00:16
I just recently started drinking Diet Pepsi Zero carbs, Zero fat, and Zero sugar. Over the past few weeks, I've had lots of stomach cramping and breakouts on my face (which I NEVER have either of normally). I didn't realize until a half hour ago that Diet Pepsi contains Phenylalanine. Upon researching it on the computer, I came across this website with these comments and am floored to see others with similar side affects. I dumped all of my Diet Pepsi out and will not drink it again. I'll update all on my stomach and skin after a week or so. btw - nothing has been different in my diet except the Diet Pepsi. So we'll see... but I have a feeling I found the cuplrit!
#55 - jen - 01/19/2009 - 00:31
Information is very useful, and it removed some scary opinions from my mind. I take soy isolate and it contains some phenylaline in combination with a lot of other amino acids, and I think that in such cases there is no harm done . Many thanks

Look for products that use xylitol instead of Aspartame. Xylitol is good for your teeth, zero calories and is a plant product hundreds of times sweeter than sugar.
#57 - cautious - 02/11/2009 - 20:19
im a health consultant for over 30 years.phenylalanine is awesome for appetite supression and for depression.the capsules work well 500 mg 1-2 caps am empty stomach ,no protein for 2 hours.its a amino acid-for petes sake!! it can raise blood pressure in high doses.
#58 - teetaw - 02/14/2009 - 00:22
While Im sure SOME of you may actually be experiencing the effects of Phenylalanine and Aspartame, I would be will to bet 60% of you are either experiencing the placebo effect, or attributing the symtoms of dozens of other bad habits combined to said chemicals. The truth is most of us have many bad habits and everyone seems to always be looking for that one size fits all solution to all your ailments. Get off the couch, excercise at least an hour a day, eat as many organic foods as possible while eating sensibly, stop smoking, and stop taking life quite so seriously and I bet most of your ailments will go away. By the way ALL softdrinks are unhealthy. Even in moderation.
#59 - Educated Consumer - 02/18/2009 - 11:13
I agree with the ice breakers sour mints-you'll get the worse case of diarrhea after eating these things.
#60 - Renee - 02/18/2009 - 15:54
I have been suffering SEVERE, almost debilitating headaches for the past couple of weeks. The only thing that has changed is that I have been drinking more Crystal Light than normal, 4-6 single packs a day. While that isn't a ton, it is more than I normal. Well, today, no crystal light and no headache. I hope this is the answer. Maybe in moderation it will eventually be ok again.
#61 - Becky - 02/18/2009 - 17:55
I am an instant coffe drinker, and after grocery shopping a few days ago i purchased a box of General Foods International "On the Go" coffee. It's sugar-free, 80mg per serving of coffee antioxidants. And last, but not least it also contains phenylalanine.
#62 - ALTHEA - 02/22/2009 - 11:37
I bought the D-Phenylalanine to take as a companion supplement along with L-Tryptophan 500mg that I take for pain, sleep and the resulting depression from living in pain. I refuse to take depression drugs much to my doctors disappointment. I do however seem to have the approval of one doctor with the L-Tryptophan. Hope not to have any drug interactions with the pain medications and muscle relaxers I have to take 3 to 4 times a day with the D-Phenylalanine. It doesn't sound like I will. Medical doctors will not get involved with supplements. Asking a medical doctor about any of this is like talking to a wall I have found. Their answer always is "I don't know anything about those" and there ends the conversation. I have to laugh to myself when I hear "always check with your doctor first" yea right!
#63 - Mallby - 02/22/2009 - 18:35
I just recently associated phenylalanine with my problems. I have been having over the years many of the side effects stated above by others. Years ago, I had to stop taking antihistamines because I started having leg cramps. I took antihistamines for years and all of a sudden I couldn't any longer. After drinking flavored water, I started getting jittery. I can't chew gum because of the same reason. I noticed I can't drink diet drinks because of cramps and getting jittery. This product needs to be completely banned from our foods. This is not our imagination.
#64 - Mert - 02/23/2009 - 13:55
#48 is absolutely 100% right. Phenylalnine is harmful to people with PKU in large amounts because they cannot process it.
If you are jittery and can't sleep after 6 cans of diet coke EVERY DAY, maybe its the CAFFIENE. Apartame is just another artificial chemical with numerous side effects. Prehaps you should understand that DIET coke/pepsi/sprite are still shit.
Drink water you morons
#65 - Luke - 03/14/2009 - 18:49
I am bipolar and taking Lamictal. I recently switched to diet soda and almost immediately noticed a very severe increase in depression to the point of feeling suicidal. Water only for me from now on.
#66 - James - 03/17/2009 - 22:31
I was drinking those sugar free waters containing this stuff (about 60ozs a day) and was hospitalized with severe stomach pain. My small intestine was swelling cutting off everything, even limiting blood flow. My doctor and surgeon could not tell me what was causing this. I even went to specialists. After reading an article warning of the dangers, I stopped my intake of ANYTHING with this product in it, including sugar free gums, and have had no problems since. Each bout of pain I had, happened during the excessive intake of phenylalnine. I won't touch anything that contains this now. I am convinced it caused my problems.
#67 - Cindy - 03/26/2009 - 12:17
Icebreakers Sours... I am not sure if I have ever been so sick in my life as in the 2 days following the consumption of these. They were good but not worth the extreme stomache cramps and diarrhea that they caused. Each candy is .8g and 4mg of that is aspartame!
#68 - Indica - 03/31/2009 - 22:57
I was using Slim Shots (a dietary aid) for about a week. It contains phenylainine. On day three I started to feel some gastric distress and by the end of 7 days, I had severe cramping. I was wondering if anyone else who used Slim Shots had the same problem.
#69 - JudyD - 04/01/2009 - 07:15
Bought Slim Shots today. Haven't taken any yet. Anyone other than #69 had any side effects?
#70 - Lilli - 04/06/2009 - 21:37
Was on Atkins diet years ago and was exercising and healthy - started to get depressed with no obvious reason - saw a therapist who couldnt pinpoint problem. Looked up depression and found diet soft drinks can cause it. Stopped drinking the diet lemonade and within a week depression lifted. Son got teary a lot a few months ago and thought the world was against him - looked into what he was eating and it was artificially sweetened gum - stopped eating it and mood changed back. Step-son has mild autism and diet drinks, gum etc all make him loopy (can tell hes had it at school when he comes home his personaility is different).
My dad was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and started drinking diet soft drink - mum rang recently stating she thinks dad is depressed (no prior history).

Finally, an intelligent response. There is so much confusion around this subject. Thank you for pointing out the difference between Aspartame and phenylalanine. You mentioned bananas contained it, but I would like to refer everyone to this website. It has the the amount of phenylalanine in each food. We all eat alot of it a day, so how could a piece of gum cause all those problems. It has to be the chemicals in Aspartame, not the phenylalanine! For example a can of tuna has 1717 mg of phenylalanine in it, cottage cheese has 1800 mg in it, soy protien has 2800 mg in it, eggs, chicken, fish, nuts, cheese and legumes all contain it. see: http://www.nutritiondata.com/foods-000086000000000000000.html

I been chewing gum forever and now there is no suger and only phenylalanine. Phenylalanine and aspartame are dangerouse to everyone. it can even kill you in some cases. products such as ice breakers contain both ingredients and i will have to look at the other packs to see if they have both too. Also it can cause stunted growth and ADDHD.
#73 - Dustin - 04/23/2009 - 20:51
How much gum should I chew a day?
#74 - wawa - 04/24/2009 - 06:24
OK Guys, get real. Any headaches from withdrawing from a caffeinated product will cause...shakes, headaches, diarreea etc. I have drank TaB and Fresca my whole life (40) and there is definitely a substance in both that triggers the dopamime level in the brain. I actually crave Fresca when I cannot get it. Sprite Zero or Diet 7up doesn't do it. It lacks that sharp taste. I have a BS in Chemistry from UICC. Besides citric acid, what is the missing ingredient?????
#75 - Houdini - 04/30/2009 - 08:25
"Cristal Light hunger satisfaction" has PHENYLALANINE as one of it's ingretiance. How high is the dosage and what then will be the side effects??
#76 - Fritz - 05/03/2009 - 14:42
OMG im type 1 diabetes and diet is the only drink i can have, and now i have found out that its killing me.
im going to have to stop drinking it to get my brain back to normal

in response to post 25 - exactly the same symptoms as i've had for years, getting worse and worse. been diagnosed with ceoliac disease (intollerance to gluten). there is a blood test your doctor can easily do to test for this. :)

Ugh! You people are all hysterically funny. Like really? A person writes about phenylalanine and all off a sudden everyone is in a damn panic frenzy. Phenylalanine is only Dangerous if you take more than your daily recommendation. Here's a thought for all you big whiner babies... Instead of crying about it and complaining about how you can't eat this and drink that anymore, make a lifestyle change. 64% of americans are overweight and lead unhealthy lifestyles... hmm maybe if you did change it you would be making better choices in the first place and wouldn't be crying about all this other crap. "Oh pop is full of sugar which equals calories. I think I'm going to quit and switch to diet" .. how about just quitting all together? #72 I love your response. You're proof that there still are intelligent people out there.
#80 - i hate whiners - 06/10/2009 - 10:45
It's funny that most of everyone's problems on this website they are being blamed by phenylalanine... I think people are getting it confused with aspartame. Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid and only if taken in excess will it cause side effects but the majority of the things people are writing about are sugar free things that contain aspartame.. Aspartame will cause headaches nausea and dizziness and all you pop drinkers... your jitteryness is probably from the caffine.
#81 - All for Phenylalanine!! - 06/10/2009 - 12:39
To comment number #73
You're an idiot. ADHD and ADD can't be caused by anything, You're born with it. If a person isn't taking medication and is choosing to take the diet route of treating ADHD, too much ASPARTAME can bring out their symptoms of hyperactivity and so on. Geez... when did people forget how to read.
#82 - Parent of ADHD Kid - 06/11/2009 - 06:45
I think that everybody has the right to express their opinions. Why some of you offend other people only because they are posting what they think? You can say : "You are wrong in what you are saying". But telling the other people idiot or histerical, in my opinion, is not nice.

Opinions? The majority of the people on this page have made clueless comments that all could have been avoided, had they read the article they were commenting on correctly. Sometimes people need a julting comment for them to wake up and pay attention and realize that "hey, maybe i should get my facts straight before I comment on anything so then I won't add to the unneeded panic"

I just finished a cup of Ovaltine light break Nutritious Energy Drink and developed a headache. I then read up on Phenylalanine which this product contains. I don't think I'll drink it anymore.
#85 - Semra - 06/16/2009 - 00:29
I was chewing a lot of sugarless gum , and noticed I'd get extremely tired, dizzy and light-headed, my stomach would get bad cramps (like I had air bubbles that were stuck!) I did research on PHENYLALANINE and found out about all the bad side effects!! No wonder I felt so awful!
I was drinking sugarless drink mixes too, and noticed that my stomach would feel weird after those too, so I completely stopped using anything with PHENYLALANINE in it! I feel much better now!

#86 - Julie - 06/17/2009 - 10:41
PHENYLALANINE IS GOOD FOR YOU!! FOR #86, YOU'RE NOT GOING TO STOP USING ANYTHING WITH PHENYLALANINE IN IT BECAUSE CHEESE, EGGS, CHICKEN, FISH ETC.... THEY ALL CONTAIN IT!! Sugarless gum contains ASPARTAME! Sugarless drinks usually contain ASPARTAME or other forms of it! What is it that people aren't getting?! When it's in a product with ASPARTAME... Phenylalanine may result in some side effects. Just stop eating stuff with ASPARTAME and you'll be fine.
#87 - ARG! - 06/19/2009 - 07:31
Note that only when you use too much of this stuff it is harmful. So limit your intake!!!!!
#88 - DarkChild - 06/19/2009 - 11:28

#89 - dalila - 06/20/2009 - 19:33
post#73, you are 98% right about ADD and ADHD etc, You are born with it. The only exception to that is myself who suffers from severe post concussion syndrome which give me symptoms that are identical to ADD.

For two yrs now Ive used a canned green tea. It seems to help remove excess fluid. Also tried a gluten free diet but still had some swell pain even on a no soda pops. If you are pku then what is the test named. The alcat.test is not offered widely, but if wheat is not it then what test should i ask for. My energy is so low from what-ever it is that b vitamins are not much help.

Does this cause acne?
#94 - Dean - 09/14/2009 - 17:28
Phenylalanine is good for you, you need it. Aspartame on the other hand is not so good for you. And if you are phenylketonuric, or pregnant, you need to read about every thing that you are about to ingest. And as for me and most people that are fortunate enought to not have any far out health risks.....moderation. Well that is how I see it. It's like the comedian Bill Mahr says, " Who said pleasure couldn't come at a price".
#95 - Javier - 09/22/2009 - 21:47
the only gum on the martket is Glee Gum w/out the additives,
All artif. sweetners to include xylitol are not good for your stomach...I had been on 7 perscriptions for anything to do with the stomach, and not one specialist asked if I chew gum or drank any diet drinks.......I blame the speclists, they KNOW. After stopping all drinks and food (gum) that contain all the ingred. all my stomach problems were gone in 3 days, HEARTBURN, GERD, IBS, INDIGESTION, ACID REFLUX, GAS etc....Anyone with these need to get your speclist to tell you the truth about the artfic. sweetners.......If one will tell you the truth......
Thanks....

I love Hawaiian Punch sugar-free packets. They have a statement on the box IN BOLD: "Made With Phenylalanine." I have never ever felt anything negative from this chemical. The only thing I believe about it is that it is an anti-depressant... because Hawaiian Punch makes me happy. Oh yeah, I'm a healthy hyper person as well with no problems and I drink this stuff 4 -5 times a day when I want a "junk-food" drink.
#98 - Steven - 10/15/2009 - 15:25
YOU ARE ALL CRAZY, THIS STUFF IS GOOD FOR YOU!!! RELAX! YOU HAVE TO HAVE OVER 5000 MGS A DAY FOR A LONG LONG TIME BEFORE ANYTHING BAD WERE TO HAPPEN.... I HAVE BEEN TAKING 1500 MGS A DAY FOR TWO YEARS AND IT HELPS WITH APPETITE AND FATIGUE! A STICK OF GUM IS NOT GOING TO CAUSE ALL THE CRAZY THINGS YOUR TALKING ABOUT! WACKOS!

I started taking sindulair for my severe allergies two weeks ago. Ever since then I have felt terrible. I am always Sick to my stomach about an hour after taking this medicine. I have also been getting dizzy spells. It takes about 5-6 hours until I start to feel better again. I have read the ingredient list, It contains phenylalaline. Seems pretty odd to me that listed as side affects on the label, includes: stomach upset, dizziness, and other side effects. This medicine has phenylalaline and suddenly I feel bad. If according to some of these people making previous comments, this ingredient cannot cause these symptoms, why are they listed as side effects on this drug label? None of my other allergy medicines make me sick!
